L. truncata truncata     L. truncata sebae            hybrids

Distribuzione geografica

INDIAN OCEAN, East Africa fino alla Baia del Bengala, Kenya, Madagascar, Seychelles, Mauritius, Sri-Lanka, Andamans, Cocos Keeling Atoll.
Kreipl & Poppe (1999:20) in merito alla distribuzione di L. truncata truncata dichiarano: "(excuding the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf area)".

Geographical distribution

INDIAN OCEAN, East Africa up to Bengala bay, Kenya, Madagascar, Seychelles, Mauritius, Sri-Lanka, Andamans, Cocos Keeling Atoll.
Kreipl & Sterns (1999:20) regarding the distribution of L. truncata truncatas declare: "(excuding the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf area) ". In the AMI collection are present two specimens, AMI.ST.02.01 and AMI ST.02.04 coming from Massawa, Ethiopia in full Red Sea and a specimen AMI ST.02.02 coming from Phuket Island, Thailand. You holds therefore that the geographical distribution of this species shoud be revised looking at a greater availability of specimens of L. truncata truncata and of L. truncata sebae.

Dimensions

The dimensions of the adult species are between 220 and the 300 mm. in length. Abbott (1961:155) quotes a record of 375 mm coming from the waters of Zanzibar. It is certainly the greatest and heaviest kind of the Genus Lambis; it is particularly strong and thick, but also the largest of the whole family. Kreipl & Poppe (1999: 20) declare that the species can reach 400 mm without pointing out any findings.
In the AMI collection there is a specimen (ST.02.01) from the waters of Massawa Ethiopia that is 310 mm.

Digitations

Posterior channel digits, five labial digits, and anterior siphon channel digits.

Colorations

The specimen L. truncata truncata iintroduces some rather ordinary coloration. The dorsal surface, when it has not been covered with a thick layer of brown periostraco or one layer of limestone, displays a coloration that spans from whitish to light ochre in color. The opening is the color of skin enriched by additional tones of orange and a particularly brilliant light yellow. In contrast, the digits are generally darker.

Freaks

In comparison to the Lambis lambis the L. truncata truncata specimen shows no notable quantities of anomalous or malformed shells. An unusual aspect, perhaps a bit controversial, emerges perhaps from the analysis of the specimen AMI.ST.02.01 which, though also having the characteristics of the L.truncata truncata relative to the form of the coil, however, possesses a greater number of digits bringing it closer to the hybrid form of L. truncata sebae. The specimen probably constitutes an anomalous form of extra digits similar to L. truncata truncata.

Hybrids

Hybrid forms for this species and for the subspecies L. truncata sebae have not yet been discovered.

Lambis (Lambis) truncata sebae (Kiener, 1843)

Distribuzione geografica

RED SEA, Israel, Egypt, Port Sudan, Guld of Aden. PACIFIC OCEAN, Ryukyu Islands, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, New Hebrides, New Caledonia, Carolines, Marianas, Marshall Islands, Gilbert Islands, Hawaii Islands, Line Islands, Ellice Islands, Samoa, Society Islands, Tuamotu Islands.

Dimensioni

Geographical distribution

RED SEA, Israel, Egypt, Port Sudan, Guld of Aden. PACIFIC OCEAN, Ryukyu Islands, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia, New Hebrides, New Caledonia, Carolines, Marianas, Marshall Islands, Gilbert Islands, Hawaii Islands, Line Islands, Ellice Islands, Samoa, Society Islands, Tuamotu Islands.

Dimensions

The subspecies reaches dimensions between 220 and 300 mm. Abbott (1961:156) reports a specimen retrieved in Samoa (Pacific Ocean) of 300 mm. Kreipl & Sterns (1999: pl.14) found a specimen 305 mm. from the waters of Somalia (East Africa).

Digits

Posterior channel digit, five labial digits, anterior siphon channel digits.

Differencies

Notwithstanding the different and particular geographical distributions among Lambis truncata truncata and Lambis truncata sebae there are substantial differences in the morphology of the shells themselves. Lambis truncata truncata evidences both in the young and in the adult samples a coil with a particularly truncated and depressed performance unlike Lambis truncata sebae where the coil naturally assumes a turricolated iperformance in the young and the adult specimens

Coloration

Particular differences do not exist in the coloration between L. truncata truncata and L. truncata sebae. The specimens, in both cases, evidence a white lower back, when devoid of the numerous encrustations, while the opening and the wall area evidence a diffused cream color with and particularly bright orange.

Freaks

There is no evidence that L. truncata sebae specimens as particularly malformed, even if greater in number than L. truncata truncata

Hybrids

L. truncata sebae evidences a hybrid shape with L. millepedea that has assumed, with time, a series of different identifiers. In reality, in light of a series of comparisons, these shapes are none other than a hybrid of L.truncata sebae x L. millepeda. L. millepeda gives life to other forms of hybrids like: L.millepeda x L. lambis.

x
Lambis millepeda (Linnaeus, 1758)

Distribuzione geografica

Geographical distribution

The examination of all the samples, even if in different locations, shows that the hybrid form L.trucata sebae x L. millepeda lives in the same area of geographical distribution as L. truncata sebae.

Dimensions

The specimen of greatest dimensions noted in the work of Kronenberg (1993: 51) - ZMS 51473-1 in the Sea Museum (Scheveningen, Netherlands) measures 244 mm., has 6 (six) labial digits excluding the siphon channel, and comes from the Philippines.

Description of the form

This hybrid form preserves all the characteristics of L. truncata sebae with the evident addition of distinctive elements of L. millepeda. One finds an increase of the labial digits that varies between 7 (seven) and 10 (ten) digits. The classical internal "lirature" of the interior lip of L. millepeda are evident, and in this form, they assume a nearly no constant presence. They are also present in the wall area of the columella with a more evident distribution toward the two anterior and posterior siphon channels.
